Summer Time!

It is summer, but that doesn’t mean the team hasn’t been active!  Many members have gone back to the valley for the school break and have been attending Jade Moon practices.  Those that have stayed in Flagstaff have been training around campus.  Keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates on when these practices are being held!

This coming weekend is a tournament in Los Vegas.  We have one person competing so lets all give Lianna Rivera our Jiayou’s and good lucks.  Everyone who can should go up to Vegas to support and cheer her on in person.  The competition will be held Saturday, August 3rd at the Tuscany Suites and Casino located at 255 E Flamingo Rd in Las Vegas, NV (about a five hour drive from Phoenix and a four hour drive from Flagstaff).  If you cannot go, no worries.  Video and photos will be taken during the event.

WUSHU CAMP!  Yay!  Everyone’s favorite part of summer, right?  The dates have been set so mark your calender as BUSY for August 20th-25th.  This is a six day camp, every night from 6PM to 9PM.  The camp is being held at the St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church located at 2540 W Baseline Rd in Mesa, AZ (85202).  Entree to camp is a $30 fee but it will be well worth it; body conditioning, basics perfecting, apparatus practice, form memorizing and so much more!  So be there or be oddly rectangular shaped.

There are only 26 days left until school starts!  Can you believe it, less then a month!  Team Practice dates are currently unannounced.  We have at least a few known people planning to show up to the first few practices so lets do our best to keep up the friendly and helpful attitude to welcome them with open arms.  We want to try to expand our numbers even more this year – could imagine taking 30 people to collegiates!  In addition to scheduled practice, there will also be extra practices so if you feel like you want to push yourself a bit more, don’t forget to show up.  Those will be announced in the Facebook group, just like before.

Keep working hard over this last month of freedom summer and don’t forget to at least stretch every day, even if you can’t actually get out to train.  Even that will do wonders for the return to practicing weekly (or daily, for some).  I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and is ready to return to practice and classes with a fire in their hearts and a pride for what they do!

Hey everyone! School has been hectic for some lately with midterms and such. This has resulted in a lot of people missing Wushu, which is fine, we all need to make sure we take care of ourselves, but we do want everyone to be up to date on what’s going on. So, here are some announcements that have been made in class and on events coming up.

  • Sunday March 10th, there is a lion dance performance in Phoenix. If you are interested in helping out with instruments or anything else please let Dusty know as soon as possible so transportation can be arranged.
  • Lion Dance classes will begin soon. There will be a post on facebook that you should click “like” if you are interested and a day will be decided. Classes will most likely be twice a month.
  • Coach classes will begin soon as well. As Dusty stated in class on Tuesday, if you don’t here anything soon give her a gentle reminder so coaching can get rolling.
  • Collegiates is coming up SOON! It may not seem like it, but after spring break we only have three weeks to prepare. Reminder, Collegiates is April 20th with a travel day most likely on the 19th. If you don’t have a completed form yet please arrange a time to meet with Dusty. And don’t forget to register.
  • Berkeley is March 30th so those who are planning on attending or competing need to let Coach Dusty or Houwangzi know so proper arrangements can be made.

Announcements will be updated as needed so if you aren’t able to attend class please check here regularly to see what is going on. Meanwhile, take care of yourselves, keep your Wushu spirit alive and Jiayou NAU!

Jiayou NAU!

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year! Yes, it has been a while since the last update, but we have been using that time to whip our wushu ability into shape. We’ve been busy this past year with tournaments, building the team, and other awesome wushu activities. Here’s a quick list of our accomplishments:

  • A group of members flew to Virginia to compete in the 16th Annual Collegiate Wushu Tournament. Along with an incredible experience, they also returned with a nice collection of medals.
  • Over the summer we had our NAU Wushu Summer Camp where we prepared to start up again at the university in Fall.
  • We have performed at many demos this last year.
  • Our 3rd Annual Jade Wushu Classic had competitors from both NAU Wushu and our sister school, Jade Moon Wushu Academy from Phoenix.
  • There is a lot of new talent that joined and our teaming is growing!
  • We’ve been training twice a week as well as some other optional training: we have a weekly conditioning class and often have an advanced class on the weekends. Coach Dusty has been offering her services for other days of the week as well.
  • Different members have been working on learning basic forms, creating a personal with Coach Dusty and/or working on difficulties.
  • We were personally invited to perform at the Chinese Culture Center for the New Year and gave a phenomenal performance. (Pictures soon)
  • And we have constantly been training hard to build muscle and memories with our Wushu family!

So that’s what we’ve been up to in the past year. With the Spring of 2013 already upon us, the NAU Wushu Team is preparing the 17th Annual Collegiate Wushu Tournament, (which will be much closer for us, location wise, this year). We also have a few demos coming up and will be more active on here. You’ll be seeing a lot more of us with pictures, videos, and updates. JIAYOU NAU WUSHU! Let’s make this semester a proud one!
